Here I will include some further project development, and discuss how I landed on my final storyboard idea.

Initial Ideas.

Extract from Note book trying out ideas.
Many Orbs in Space, 1974.

At first I explored the idea of using a painting, and trying to stray away from the obvious option of a mobile. I used sketches and brain storming to see how I could make it work, finally settling on the “Many Orbs in Space”. The name itself – lending to the project well, and a unique starting point for the painting to come to life in a way that expands on its visual elements. I think this concept will be unique because it invites me to explore abstract ideas, putting myself in his shoes and embracing the way he includes movement, balance and constant motion within his work.

Story Board

1: The Calm Beginning- Here I will introduce the viewer to the simplicity concept—static yet dynamic representation of Calder’s Many orbs in space. The orbs, representing the individual parts of the universe, seem isolated but also balanced. The quietness sets up the anticipation for movement.
2:Buzzing – The Orbs begin to move, and the sci-fi like sound in introduced. This creates anticipation for what is going to happen next.
3: The First Drift- Slowly, all of the orbs begin to shift outward. Marking the first change and introducing the idea of possible transformation.
4:Rotations- This section continues to build momentum and begins the metamorphosis. As the balls begin to spin around the larger Central Orb (which stays stationary) building the audience anticipation further.
5: This section continues the feeling of Metamorphosis process as the orbs join together gathering around the Central Sphere and merging into one. The movement begins to feel more purposeful, signalling a transformation is coming.
6: This section represents the end point from a collection of separate entities to a singular, powerful force, and this the Metamorphosis is complete. The ball will hang in space for a few seconds, then zoom out and disappear. Leaving empty space, and the Audience to wonder – what was this entity, and where has it gone?

In conclusion, the development of my Orbs in Space project will hopefully merge Calder’s abstract art with movement, drawing inspiration from his work but making a new result in my style. I think my storyboard captures the progression of transformation, successfully demonstrating how I will include a metamorphosis. The transformation will symbolise a journey of balance and change. I aim to keep the viewer engaged with an evolving narrative.
